The history of REAL COMPANHIA VELHA began in 1756, when the Royal Port Wine Company, as it is known abroad, was founded by the Royal Charter of King José I, under the auspices of its Prime Minister, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, The Count of Oeiras and the Marquis of Pombal. Formed by the most important farmers of the Douro Valley, and significant figures of the city of Porto, the company was entrusted with the task of "sustaining the cultivation of vines, preserving its natural production and purity, for the benefit of agriculture, public health trade". Among the numerous services provided by the company in favor of the public, the most important event was the "Pombalina Demarcation of the Douro Valley", which was dictated between 1758 and 1761 by the Chamber of Deputies of REAL COMPANHIA VELHA. In 1781, the Royal Port Wine Company, took its Ports to the Baltic Empire of Catherine of Russia, through large shipments transported on ships chartered for this purpose. This was the beginning of a continuous trade between the Portuguese and Baltic ports and, as a result of the Company's action, exports of Douro wines have undergone considerable and successive increases. During the famous French invasions in 1809, Napoleon Bonaparte's troops demanded the wines of the REAL COMPANHIA VELHA as part of their rations. In 1811, the British officer Lord Wellington and his troops, at the time established in the city of Lamego, demanded the wines of the REAL COMPANHIA VELHA, in which a supply of 300 barrels was issued from the warehouses of the Company in Weight of the Ruler. In 2016, REAL COMPANHIA VELHA celebrated 260 years of uninterrupted activity at the service of Porto and douro.
