WHISKY - CARDHU - SINGLE...

The CARDHU distillery was founded in 1824 by John Cumming, who was formerly a whisky smuggler. The distillery was located high on mannoch hill, above the Spey River, due to peat that softened the water. The distillery began as an agricultural distillery, working seasonally after harvest. The distillery was run primarily by Helen Cumming, who used to sell bottles of whiskey to passers-by through the window of her farmhouse. Because of the hill where the distillery of the farm was, Helen saw the arrival of the police and threw herself flour and said she was making bread to disguise the smell. She then offered them tea and hoisted a flag outside so that the other nearby distilleries could see and act immediately.

In 1885, the distillery was rebuilt on a new piece of land, but remained in the hands of the Cummings, being run by Elizabeth Cumming, the daughter-in-law of John and Helen Cumming. The stills from the old distillery building were sold to William Grant, who set up the Glenfiddich distillery. The new building and distilleries meant cardhu could produce three times the amount of whiskey he previously produced. These higher production levels led JOHNNIE WALKER and Sons to buy much of Cardhu's production to apply to their increasingly popular mix.
