RED WINE - FRIAR JOHN

Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that, at first, was dedicated to the commercialization of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It is today the oldest family business still active in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, with the prohibition of the production of Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the Company began to commercialize table wines from Bairrada. At that time, it also begins the production of natural sparkling wines, by the "champanhês" method, and it is important to highlight, at this stage, the important role of the French winemaker Gaston Mennesson. It begins the export of wines to the Brazilian market and, shortly thereafter, to the Portuguese colonies in Africa. At the end of the 1950s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region was born – "Frei João" – and, a little later, a brand of the demarcated region of Dão, the "Porta dos Cavaleiros".

The Caves São João acquire the Quinta do Poço do Lobo, rustic property with about 37 hectares, located in the small town of Pocariça in the municipality of Cantanhede. The Quinta was then completely replanted with selected and strictly divided varieties. With the grapes harvested there, the company started the production of the wine "Quinta do Poço do Lobo - Bairrada", a Bairrada Red with grapes of baga, moreto and castelão varieties; the "Quinta do Poço do Lobo - Cabernet Sauvignon", a varietal wine with the most prestigious variety in the world; a white wine prepared with the Arinto variety and the "Espumante Quinta do Poço do Lobo", a sparkling wine with grapes of arinto and chardonnay varieties.
